England Revisited
Summer 1971: Simon English visited 75 points across the country to write the word 'ENGLAND' on England.
Summer 2010: Simon English made a new artwork by revisiting those points.

On a leg of pylon in Rhubarb field near Kirkstall Bridge. Leeds. 2nd Flag placed to round off the whole trip. The first one was still there.
On the same south east leg of the same electricity pylon as 1971.
The field in which it stood had ceased growing Rhubarb and by 1992 was growing lettuce for a more health conscious market. Now the field has been grassed over and is three or four well tended Rugby pitches for one of the Leeds Colleges. The heap of mushroom compost has, of course, long gone, but the side of the pylon next to the railway has been overgrown by brambles as has the railway’s concrete and wire fence which still stands.
The brick sheds to the north have been cleared away. Kirkstall Abbey is still visible across the river Aire. The Leeds to Bradford railway that in 1971 had diesel engines has been electrified and the passing traffic seems faster.
Much of the local stone buildings still stand but with other uses, certainly the brewery I used to collect yeast from has been converted to student flats and where there were mills are now supermarkets.
