England Revisited
Summer 1971: Simon English visited 75 points across the country to write the word 'ENGLAND' on England.

On post marking an artillery range 4 miles S.W. of Richmond. West of Catterick Camp near the Moor Road from Richmond to Leyburn.
On a ‘Keep Out. Military Training Area’ sign. This is on the same place but probably replaces the posts I used in 1971. The entrance to the ranges has been set back from the road to provide a large apron on which motorised equipment can park or turn onto the training grounds from a public road both to the west and to the east where the entrance has a new guard house.
Visually Halfpenny House Moor looks more wooded. In 1971 this was grass, sedge and gorse but now the little conifer plantations have reached maturity to break up the open ground. This is especially evident round the target bank at the end of the rifle range so sharply prominent in 1971 but now well disguised by the tops of the fir trees. This is even less evident as the then exposed concrete back wall is now buried under an earth and grass bank. There are shooting banks at 100yard intervals between this facility and the road from where it is unclear whether this is still used or now made redundant by the use of modern weaponry and more mobile fighting; all rather different from the days as a school cadet and target shooting with old .303s.
